this is another of the many texts which speaks to God act of predestination / soveriegn election --- and it is full of in depth understanding into Gods purposes
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
such discussions go 1 of 2 ways .. either it leads to a fully biblically orbed world veiw of how God chooses to show his own purpose through the act of election, or is it to a point rejected, ignore or thrown out as a false reading and replace with a tradition based ideal
so the next point is to exegete the verses and reveal the biblical truth on the matters at hand
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose
the first thing we need to understand in this matter .. is how do we understand the first portion ... "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God" .... do we understand as to mean that man is the one who makes Gods purpose come into fluition as to say that God see man respond to the gospel through an act of looking into the fute ideal, or that God choses man based on his own purpose and will .. it is an eternal action that results in God alone being gloified in aand through redeemed in christs work
we need to understand our love for God did not come from our own willingness but from Gods work in regeration -- those (the redeemed) are the ones who are called ..... in accordence to Gods purpose
to put this in other manner of speach those (the elect) can only love God with the love that is required becase .. A) .. they have been regenerated, and B) have been redeemed by christ .. God is the one who soveriegnly brings us to the place where we can show him this love
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren
here we enter into what God has chosen to do ... the first part speaks to an eternal choice on Gods part "For those whom He foreknew" this is not speaking to the philosophical idea .. of looking into the future and choosing based on the "free choices of man" as it is so commonly assumed .. there is another way that speaks sololy of God choice in the elect ... he chose to enter into a redeeming relationship with a group of people ... so the term "those" becomes a personal quality
those who are chosen are personal, not non personal ... are the same group to which paul then discribes as being conformed ... this is also personal ... it is not speaking to personal blessing but is speaking to a group of people ... so these people who are personally chosen ... are elected unto sonship, and conformed to the image of his son
and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
continuing the flow of the presentation .. we now turn to four actions which discribe an already finalised position of the believer(s) -- we know this from 2 points that present themselves in this verse ... 1 -- the actions are in the past tense, 2 are in the active voice
on the first it is speak of these actions being in eternity past .. and also that they are prested as past acion on our behalf .. so in form of speak .. the father is the object of these personal action, and the son is the subject of these actions .. and the believer is the result .. on the second paul has the sme group through out .. being the elect
then dealing with th actions ... the father ... He predestined, He also called, like wise, He called, He also justified, and also He justified, He also glorified
Justification .. that God makes man right before him, so man is righteous and just not on account of anything he himself does, but in that which Christ does in his salvific work .. and man can not lose this justification since it is not his own
glorification ... this the end result of a believer who receive the full reward of eternal life .. that happen through sanctification
sanctification is the ongoing work of the spirit to conform us to the image of christ our lord --- which is part n part with the act of renewing the heart of believer .. taking the heart of stone and replacing it with a heart of flesh
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
a --- What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? ...
paul here states by asking a simple question ... to which the answer can only be seen in light of Gods promises are certian and the result is a sure reality .. there is nothing man can say since this result id so overwhelming that a response lacks a true heart felt thanksgiving for such a privelege to be undertaken
then paul makes this point " If God is for us, who is against us?" ... the answer even if the world is against us on eath, there is no reality to it .. since God is the protector of his own .. the outcome is certian we will be with Christ basking in his glory
b --- He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
in this we have a few points to make in establishing it meaning ... the giving of the son is immediately seen as a sign that our security and freedom is as sure as the reality of his sons purpose in becoming a man .. in that the sole reason was the redemption of the redeemed (the elect)
the next point to contend with is "us all" ... whom is in veiw since people seem to get the impression paul is speaking of all humanity . every single person .. but is this the case .. or just an assumption being made.. but noot proven (for this we need to wait for the next part) -- but one thing can be made known is that this is not just some potential redeeming but it is infact a garanteed redemption
to which if all mankind are saved .. and not specific people then there is simply no garantee
and the next words are very interesting "how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?" .. this also speaks to the reality of a specific purpose in christs atonement .. that as sure as he died for a specific reason then since God is not against us ... therefore he will bestow all his blessing on us, and give us what is needed to live a God centre life
c --- Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies
to the second point of the last section .. "delivered Him over for us all" ... the all in context refer to the masses of the elect .. every person who was chosen in christ .. since this speaks of some one or people trying to bring a charge .. we can only make the point that this means not every person who ever live is the elect .. some are the reprobate
and there stands to reason that no one has the right to jusdge us as God silely, alone has judged us as worthy in light of christs work as the redeemer .. so we are now seen as the righteousness of christ
d --- who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
here we see the final point come in to sight .. we are no longer in the place of being condemned as Christ has taken our place and recieved the punishment we deserve as sinners, so we have this great freedom Christ as our only hope .. is the risen and glorified master of the elect .. and intercedes on our behalf before the father
