The Bible teaches, and I believe in, the eternal security of the born-again believer. The man who has trusted Jesus Christ has everlasting life and will never perish. But the eternal security of the believer does not depend on his perseverance.Again, like that of the other doctrines this gentleman has misunderstood what the doctrine teaches; and thereby he has misrepresented it in a clear and succinct manner, when he says this "the eternal security of the believer" this again is the clear truth in the bible and in the reformed truth. And to say that the bible teaches "preservation," and not "perseverance" of the saints is a clear denial of what the bible teaches about Sanctification: which is dual process God keeps the man saved, but the man must display the fruits of that truth.
I do not know a single Bible verse that says anything about the saints' persevering, but there are several Bible verses that mention the fact that the saints have been preserved. Perseverance is one thing. Preservation is another. No. The saints do not persevere; they are preserved.
This is a real issue due to the unfortunate title of the doctrine; as I said it best to called it Sanctification of the Saints or perhapss "Lordship salvation." which hold much of the same implication That God sovereignly keeps the believer in faith, but the Spirit produces fruits of truth saving faith.
Now lets consider any and all the passage or verses this man has to offer as refutation of this biblical truth:
The Bible states in Jude 1. "Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ..." First Thessalonians 5:23 says, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly: and I pray God your whole spirit and soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."Here we have his list verses which are forced to speak against the very truth they are really teaching upon. That of course, being the very dual work of Sanctification... Which both God and man have their part to play in application. Therefore, there is no real need to consider them closely.
"To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
The Bible says in John 10:27-29: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Fathers hand."
But really to make the point out this one fact, this mans misrepresentation of this divine truth; does not in and of itself prove that it is a false teaching.
Now let us consider just a few passage which speak to the second application of mans need to demonstrate his faith by his fruits, here are the passages:
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.(Philippians 2:12-13).Here is one of the clearest passages on the dual nature of Sanctification; there is no way to deny this point. It is clear in the scriptures implication. to deny, reject or even misrepresent this passage is to mishandle the Scripture and call oneself in question for blaspheming God's word by twisting it to their own destruction. Notice what it teaches in this passage:
First, Man must "work out your own salvation." this is not implying that we earn our salvation, but that our life in Christ must be one of continual fruit production. To put it another way, the believer's life is to a beaken of God glory, of Christ's love and of the Spirits leading.
Second, "for it God who works in you," the life saving- heart transforming, conformity that the Spirit of God does under the father's direction. Is the place in which the believer is being led to living his life as "a sacrifice unto God" in other words, It is God inward operation that brings the believer in line with his will and purpose and ultimate glorification.
Another set of important passage which teach this truth are the following ones:
I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:1-6)
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. (Titus 2:11-14).
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. (Titus 3:4-8)
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1: 22-25)
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:14-17).All these above passage highlight the twin truth, the dual action of Sanctification Whereby God works in the man in salvation - in keeping the believer in faith til the very last days; until the time for our cross over comes into view then he will bring us into glory. But in this life, the believer is led by the Spirit to fully yield to Christ as Lord through heart felt obedience; which in turn produce a life of fruit. Such things as Love for God, Love for the divinely revealed truth in the word. Love for the brothers, Love for doctrinal truth. And much more.
