In this article my sole intention is to provide a critique of a number of statements that these preachers make in sermons and books. And in doing this very thing, my goal is expose his lies and deception, even if he is unaware of such a thing taking place; nevertheless, it is abundantly clear in his works and sermons as we shall discover from here on out.
The biblical mandate in me carrying out such work is overwhelmingly strong that would be unwise for me tread on already declared ground, (see chapter 2). But for the sake of brevity I will provide another vital passages in my position:
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
Here we have a charge given by the Apostle Paul to his young protégé timothy; which as we read in the context is given a vital point that every teacher that Timothy puts in place must followed. it is a charge which Timothy himself would have had to be careful not to violate in the slightest form.
Notice Paul's central point at this juncture is this '.Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness," in this we have a direct positive command and direct negative implication being given: First, the teacher (pastor) must correctly hand the scripture for it is a God glorifying action. Second, the teacher must pay careful attention to his handling of the divine word in order that they will not be led into grave error.
All these things must be silenced, done way away with as it is leading people to the brinks of hell; granted many are deserving such as the people who teach it, but not all are of that path. For us to get a good understanding of the real issues of scripture; I will provide 2 things to expose the deceptions of Joel’s teachings. First, the context of all passages that are mentioned. Second, a true exegetical commentary.
The examination:
(1) In Chapter 4, Jesus met a women at the well in Samaria, and asked her for a drink of water. She was surprised, because back then, the Jews the Jews didn't have anything to do with the Samaritans. She said, "How can you ask me for a drink?" Jesus said, "if you knew who I was, you would ask me for a drink, and I would give you a drink of living water." I wonder how many times God tells us that he wants to do something great in our lives, that we are going to be healthy and well; we are going to get out of debt. We feel it strongly, but like the woman at the well, we start thinking about what we don't have, and before long, we talk ourselves out of God's best. (John 4)
A part of the problem in this statement is that they miss the central point of the chapter; Jesus whole intention was not for the women to go home feeling self absorbed but rather she went home understanding that her sin was holding her captive. These preachers turn this wonderful chapter about man's sinfulness and Christ's true divinity being displayed through his knowledge of her sin into a free for all fest for being self-centred and deceived into thinking it is all about you.
Notice what’s stated, "I wonder how many times God tells us that he wants to do something great in our lives, that we are going to be healthy and well; we are going to get out of debt. We feel it strongly, but like the woman at the well, we start thinking about what we don't have, and before long, we talk ourselves out of God's best."
One should be very disturbed at how they can at ease turn a text that is about salvation from sin, the very thing which is destroying man internally, and is a barrier to eternal life in to something that centres on on the temporal, here and now situations of every day life. Where is the connection? God is not concerned with these thing as much as he is with the eternal value of a human soul.
It only takes a few quick examples to show this is the case, we have examples to consider:
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12: 7-10)
Here is the perfect example, Apostle Paul; of whom is one of the great teachers and defenders of the truth of the gospel. As the passage suggests, Paul has an issue which wrecked havoc on him and he referred to it as a 'thorn in his flesh' this was not as some believe a repressed homosexual desire, but something much deeper that it could have been fatal for his ministry. Some indicate that it was some kind of eye issue or something which could have been so severe to his life.
Therefore, the idea that God just want to heal you and give your heart's desires is sheer nonsense and if left uncheck could lead to some very serious sinful behaviour.
Now as we notice in the opening portion of his comment he speaks about John 4, where he states this:
"In Chapter 4, Jesus met a women at the well in Samaria, and asked her for a drink of water. She was surprised, because back then, the Jews the Jews didn't have anything to do with the Samaritans. She said, "How can you ask me for a drink?" Jesus said, "if you knew who i was, you would ask me for a drink, and i would give you a drink of living water.”
Here we have a case of not fully understanding the situation, that coupled with this false teaching that comes afterwards. He was not simply asking her a question, the question was designed to provoke a response where there ordinarily would have been none. Due to the the fact, that the Israelites looked down on the Samaritans with contempt because they were impure by means of “inter-racial” marriage. And Christ come to break down that kind of hostility (Ephesians 2:11-15, Galatians 4: 23-29, Colossians 3:5-10).
Now getting back to the key passage in this statement:
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth (John 4: 13-24)
Here is the key section that needs to be focus on, and when one does we notice that there are undeniable elements being spoken too. The first, happens to be the woman's sin of adultery; and of course, Christ does not hold up the Jewish stand of the law. He goes straight to the heart of the issue. And he does because he is God and knows her sin. She does not need to reveal it to him; for he knows her sinful state. And this leads to the second, the living water does not refer to mere human water; it is in this case, referring to the fact that in Christ all sinner can find true refuge from their sins. In other words, he himself is the living water... he is eternal life to all who believe.
And this point to an even huger problem, these preachers use this passage as way to promote his deception and evidently misses the point. If he understood the passage he would never have gone here. But they are left in sheer ignorance to the real truth in the passage.
(2) Interestingly, to most people, the famous race horses don't look much different from the ordinary horses. Certainly, they are beautiful animals, but the average person can't ascertain the champion from the well-bred horse. The difference is in the blood. That's what makes them valuable. It's the same with you (us). The scripture says, 'we overcome by the blood of the lamb, the word of our testimony' and a willingness to lay our lives. Because of what God has done. Everyone of us is a thorough-bred. ..... You need to recognise what you have on the inside. It says in 1 Corinthians that you 'you were brought with a high price.' God gave his best for you, his only son. So please don't go around thinking you are worthless. (Revelations 12:11/ 1 Corinthians 6:20)
No, this is not an interesting thing; what you are doing here is comparing apple to oranges and assuming something which is not at all connected. First of all, race horses and humans do not share anything in common, even in the blood as you are trying to spin in this statement. There is nothing in the blood of an animal that determines whether it will be a race horse, in fact, it could be said that all horse are built for racing. As they all are from the same ancestor, a horse. This means no matter how far you want to push this silly notion; at some point it will break down. As it is based on falsehood. All horse were designed and built by the almighty for the same unique purpose. And now lets consider your other claim, there is nothing on the inside especially the blood of a human that determines his position in life. At the end of the day, all mankind were created in the image of God and due to the fall that image as corrupted. And now we all are sinners from birth.
Lets consider the passages raised in this attempt,
All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)
Now when correctly handling the biblical text, it is always vital to take note of the surrounding context for it will provide a much need key for our benefit; in that it helps us to correctly under the point. For example we have this statement, "the body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the lord for the body." In other words, since we have been redeemed at a heavy cost of Jesus life, we are now apart of his body. And to dishonour oneself through sin is to dishonour the lord in the process. It is all apart of the fact, we have been spiritually united to Christ in his death and resurrection (Romans 6). It not a wise thing for one to isolate a partial verse and ignore the over context. the passage has nothing to do with our blood, nor race horses. And definitely not to those at these “churches” who are not Christians.
Now for the other scripture that is misapplied in this statement:
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” (Revelations 12:7-12)
I am failing to see the connect between the bloodline theory that these preachers propounds from their writings and their "pulpit" and the above passage, even the single verse quoted out of its over all passage. It is as though Joel has some ideal which he strongly believe and is forcing it upon the verse in question. But no one is the wiser as it real meaning. Putting that issue aside!
What is this speaking to, and what is not speaking too.. to answer this we only need to recognise one fact. Which is this, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death." It is clear that it is the blood of the lamb that enables us conquer the evil one. In other words, it is the power of Christ which is leading us to be victorious and not our own blood.
(3) But we also have a spiritual bloodline. The good news is that our spiritual bloodline can over ride our natural bloodline. The scripture talks about all things become new. The old is passing away. In other words, we have entered into a new bloodline. When you understand all that God has done for you, and you begin to act on it, then you can rise out of any adversary, you can over come any negativity from your past. there's power in your bloodline. David said in psalms psalms 139 'God created my most inner being, knitted me together in my mothers womb' verse 16 says, 'All the days ordained for me were written in the book before one of them came to be'. Notice, David is saying that God saw us before we were born. before Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses or even your grand parents... God knew you. In other words, your parent didn't just get together and decide to have a child, You were pre-ordained to be here, before the foundation of the world. I love the scripture that says, 'if we belong to Christ, we are Abraham seed, and heirs according to promise.' (Colossians 3: 9-10, Psalms 139 and Galatians 3: 29)
Now we get into the heart of this kind of thinking when it states, "But we also have a spiritual bloodline. The good news is that our spiritual bloodline can over ride our natural bloodline." What a statement! more to the point, what an incomprehensible statement. Just where is this being pulled from. The bible knows no such things. In fact, when we consider just what the bible teaches, it is a clear case of a false teaching.
For example, it is true that there is a battle between the natural man (the sinful nature) and the spiritual man (the spiritual nature). But we have no ultimate control over either. Notice what Galatians 5 says,
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. (verses 16-17)
It is abundant from this section, that both the carnal nature and the Spiritual nature are at war with each other.... and for us to assume we have any control is not the case. One thing that is apparent in this is Jesus' words in John 8 "the one who is sins, is a slave to sin," this fact is undeniable; man through the fall lost all self control, it is the real fact that the true believer is being conformed to Christ day by day.
But yet, he is still in this body of destruction facing the temptation that is inevitably the course of their life. And man can not in and of himself triumph over anything, he is own worst enemy, believing in what is not the truth.
Let's consider the first text, which they only highlights only 2 verses 9-10, but i will provide a larger context for more clarity:
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. (Colossians 3:5-11)
The best way for us to understand this passage is through it's emphasis on "put off the old, put on the new" is to see it as command in relation to regeneration. The Holy Spirit who regenerated us, through stripping us of the sinful nature that was ours and placing it on Christ. And in light of this great truth, Paul is commanding us that we should continual throw off the sin that abides in us. But how is this achieved: we need to go back to verses 1-2 keep our focus on Christ.
The next passage is a very significant old testament psalm which speaks in a general sense to all mankind, but has more specific application. Notice the words:
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.( Psalms 139 :13-16)
This is a beautiful section describing the truth of the pregnancy of an unborn child (who of course, is a living child even when a few moments of breathing). It is important to note, that this is indeed a testament to the unborn 'foetus' is a living and breathing human. And science has pretty much established this to the case; and even mother will agree if they are truthful.
While this can be taken in a universal sense that it is addressing human from a general fact, it is wise for us to also allow the context speak its original point as well. And when we do, it is primarily a psalm about David and his relationship with God. A great psalm indeed.
Now having said this, I want to back up a bit and dispel the underline assumption in this. these teachers are thinking that when God created a child in the womb, he instilled some divine energy such spiritual blood. There is no place in this context that suggests this. it is based on a misplaced ideal that has no biblical basis.
The final passage to utilised in this comment is from Galatians 3, which reads as:
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:23-29)Once again, we see that they have misapplied the words from verse 29; without the slightest bit of concern for the rest of the text. It is impossible to reason that based on one verse you have ripped from its core teaching and assume that it teaches a false "spiritual bloodline" concept, when it has no basis.
Now what is the real truth in this passage, like much of the New Testament; it has two terms: the old nature, being dead in sin , under the curse of the law, and being a slave to its capacity. And the new nature, which has been freed from sin, and has been brought at a price, which mean you belong to Christ and are seen in his righteousness.
(4) Before you were born, God saw you, and endowed you with gifts and talents uniquely designed for you. He gave you ideas and creativity, as well as specific areas in which you can excel. Why then do so many people today fill unfulfilled in their lives, merely going to work at some mundane job, trying to earn a living, stuck in a career they don't like? The answer is simple: they are not drawing the dreams I desire, God has placed one in your hearts. You need to be aware of your natural strengths as well and how to use your best advantage and to benefit others. It says in Romans 12, verse 6 (in the living bible) 'God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well.' You can't do everything well, but you can do something well. focus on your strengths and make sure that you are not missing out on your destiny because you are getting involved in something that doesn't come naturally. When you are truly in your destiny, it's not a constant struggle it just feels right. Proverbs 18:16 says that your gift will make more room for you, I'm convinced that if you'll get into your destiny, no matter where you are, you won't have any problem getting hired or getting happy. You won't have a problem finding friends, work, or opportunities. In fact, if you'll focus on your strength and what your gifted to do. (Romans 12:6, Proverbs 18:16)
This statement is incomprehensible, for it is based on an idea in which it central theme is YOU and what You have to do; in order for you to make the best of life. Take the opening of this statement:
Before you were born, God saw you, and endowed you with gifts and talents uniquely designed for you. He gave you ideas and creativity, as well as specific areas in which you can excel. Why then do so many people today fill unfulfilled in their lives, merely going to work at some mundane job, trying to earn a living, stuck in a career they don't like? The answer is simple: they are not drawing the dreams they desire, God has placed one in your hearts. You need to be aware of your natural strengths as well and how to use your best advantage and to benefit others.
Why is it that these preachers always seems to focus on "you" as the central focus of all their sermons; and God as side line tactic. Why did God create man? What was the purpose in the overall sense of things? This subject is never even broached in this statement. He assumes that just because you exist; that means you are the centre of all things.
But the most important thing in this section to consider, is found in these words "The answer is simple: they are not drawing the dreams they desire, God has placed one in your hearts" Now I am not saying that is good by saying it is important. What I am outlining is this: Where in all of the scripture does it say "God put a dream in your hearts." Name one passage.
The answer is simple: they are not drawing the dreams I desire, God has placed one in your hearts. You need to be aware of your natural strengths as well and how to use your best advantage and to benefit others. It says in Romans 12, verse 6 (in the living bible) 'God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well.' You can't do everything well, but you can do something well. focus on your strengths and make sure that you are not missing out on your destiny because you are getting involved in something that doesn't come naturally
After making this incredible assertion, they provide what they believe is a scriptural witness to this ideal. But the truth is that he has read some false concept into this passage. And in doing so, he has corrupted Romans 12.
Not only does Romans 12 refute this false teaching; it also makes it plain that Joel has no right teaching anything biblical, no matter how small it is. And here is the reason I say this.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Here is the full section from Romans 12; and what we find is that Paul is addressing a particular people in reference to their new lives in Christ. And Paul starts this passage: "I appeal to you, therefore, brothers" meaning that this is a Christian practice in light of and based upon the previous 11 chapters which are doctrine.
Therefore, Paul, makes the point that the church must first have a sound understanding of the doctrines of the faith; which will lead to a sound practice of the faith. But here in lies the problem, these congregations are being deprived of both sound theological doctrine and sound practice and living. And that is very damning.
And this leads to the second issue, when it is read in context it is addressing only one kind of people; that being the redeemed elect of God, Christ own body. Not unbelievers which these preachers teach. It is hard to even read something and not communicate it accurately and faithfully
Next they go and use a proverb to teach his false beliefs:
When you are truly in your destiny, it's not a constant struggle it just feels right. Proverbs 18:16 says that your gift will make more room for you, I'm convinced that if you'll get into your destiny, no matter where you are, you won't have any problem getting hired or getting happy. You won't have a problem finding friends, work, or opportunities. In fact, if you'll focus on your strength and what your gifted to do.
Just what is this saying. It is once again, an incomprehensible statement. Just how is one meant to know what their destiny is or if they are truly in it; it is just an assumption. And these preachers are not explaining these matters clearly enough for us to even follow this point. What if your destiny does not line up with God's purposes, which one is over-ridden... God's purpose or your destiny.
No matter how you look at this, there is no real basis for saying "get into your destiny and all things will flow into your direction" this kind of thinking is based on a deception , so great that it is an immediate danger for all who proclaim it and believe it.
Now we can consider the solo verse that Joel highlights as his proof for this crazy ideal:
An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great. The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him. (Proverbs 18:15-17)
As Brother Chris Rosebrough said of the proverbs,"these sayings are given for the believers (Christians) alone," from this we learn that these are great instruction of wisdom that we can gain a better picture of who God is and what is important to him. Now notice these above sayings are teaching us that the believer through God's mercy will never be left alone in any situation. We have the true God living in us by his Spirit.
In other words, when we who are led by the Spirit; will ultimately be able to prevail any circumstance.
(5) No, you need to start talking back to the accuser. You need to rise up in your authority and say, "wait a minute. I am the righteousness of God. God has made me worthy I may have made mistakes but I know I am forgiven, I know I am the apple of God's eye. I know God has great things in store for me." The scriptures tell us to 'put on the breast plate of God's approval.' God made us. He knows everything about you, and he still approves you. He is pleased with you , you may have faults, but you still are the apple of God's eye. You may not be where you should be, but at least you're not where you used to be. Quit condemning yourself. The bible tells us, "he that began a good work in you will continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." God is still working on us. ( Ephesians 6: 14, Philippians 1:6)
Here we have the most amazing statement that Joel has stated, he says the following interesting statement:
No, you need to start talking back to the accuser. You need to rise up in your authority and say, "wait a minute. I am the righteousness of God. God has made me worthy I may have made mistakes but I know I am forgiven, I know I am the apple of God's eye. I know God has great things in store for me.”
I assure you that if any of these people that believe in these preachers teaching and puts it into practice, they will be so disappointed in the response they receive; for it is vital for us to note: No man has the power to face and conquer Satan. It is impossible to make such a claim without any real backing; of course, many can overcome ordinary challenges; but in this case, man can not over come Satan's attacks. It is only through the power of Christ that one can conquer all spiritual assaults.
Now there are a number issues to consider when they say "I am the righteousness of God," while it is true believers are viewed before God as Christ's righteousness. However, in this matter it is quite a different thing.
1) These preachers do not know if they or any of those they "pastor" are in actual reality true believers. And this is because of the spirit of self -deception.
2) These preachers never has taught the bible in any legitimate fashion; expositional or exegetical. this points to the illegitimate nature of his teachings!
3) On top of these fact, it is by the sound scriptural judgement that one can unpack such teaching and reveal it sheer falsity of his mythology.
Now lets consider the first scripture that they utilise in this bid:
The scriptures tell us to 'put on the breast plate of God's approval.' God made us. He knows everything about you, and he still approves you. He is pleased with you , you may have faults, but you still are the apple of God's eye.
This statement is illogical! Notice that they take a partial verses, to which they assume a meaning which is no where found in the context. Ephesians 6:10-20 has nothing to do with the creativity of God, but the spiritual growth of the new creation in Christ. Take notice of what Paul says,
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm (Ephesians 6: 10-13)
Here we have small section of this amazing passage; which is addressed to believers about their walk with Christ. And in this passage, Paul lays out the spiritual warfare that the Spirit of God provides through true knowledge of the bible ... "and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." The word of God, when correctly handled (2 Timothy 2:14-16); is a powerful tool against all Satan's attacks.
And this attack from these teachers, that is exactly what it is an attack. It is no different, it has to be dealt with thoroughly and concisely.
Now lets consider the second scripture that they utilise:
You may not be where you should be, but at least you're not where you used to be. Quit condemning yourself. The bible tells us, "he that began a good work in you will continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." God is still working on us.
The incoherence of this statement is glowing. If they were honest people; they would not make this statement. For all those people are nothing but sinners who need forgiveness. But let us see the passage he is mutilating,
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel (Philippians 1:3-7)
The first thing one should note is this is a thanks giving prayer; where Paul is delighting over the people in the Philippi churches who had shown great spirit growth. This passage does contain some very direct statements which are about God's work in these people. Paul's words are very personal and are to be seen in such a manner; there may be some implication to this time for true Christians, but that is the polar opposite of what these preachers are teaching.
Paul says "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Such a tremendous statement that underneath is a praise of God's work.
(6) God didn't create you to average. He didn't make us to barely get by. You were created to excel. The scriptures teach that before the foundation of the world, God not chose us, but he equipped us with everything we need to live his abundant life. You have the seeds of greatness inside of you, but it is up to you to believe and act upon them. Every day, we should make positive declarations over our lives. We should say things like, 'I am blessed, I am prosperous, I am healthy, I am talented, I am creative.' When we do that, we are building up our self -image. As those words permeate your heart and mind, especially your subconscious mind, eventually they will begin to change the way you see your self. The scriptures say, 'with our tongue, we can either bless or curse our life.' ( Ephesians 1:4, James 3:10)
Here is another amazing statement! Amazing because he is making an assertion to which he has absolutely not backing from Scripture. Notice his words,
God didn't create you to average. He didn't make us to barely get by. You were created to excel. The scriptures teach that before the foundation of the world, God not chose us, but he equipped us with everything we need to live his abundant life. You have the seeds of greatness inside of you, but it is up to you to believe and act upon them.
Notice in the first three phrases they are trying to say that people who are down on their last rut are not living to their true potential. Such a remark, is seen as a real noble thing based on the fact it is these preachers. And they can be forgiven since they are such kind people. But the reality is far grimmer, when you strip away all the non essential elements. What they really are implying is far more sinister, they are saying that God did not create us to be found such ways, while it true to a degree; it is important that we see that al things that are seen in this world is apart of his hidden decree. And where we find ourselves is just where God has put us.
In this section we find the first scripture that being utilised is ... "The scriptures teach that before the foundation of the world," God not chose us, but he equipped us with everything we need to live his abundant life.... Now we need to see that this a pure distortion of this great text, Paul was saying this about The church as a whole through history. Each member was chosen in Christ.
There simply is no way to make this application, where by it has no direct subject ... when it clearly does "God chose us (the subject) in Christ (the object). " Just read the whole passage and see that what these preachers have done is twist the verse by giving some wider and unidentified audience. When in fact, the audience is the elect believers.
In the second offering we face the same situation as most citations. Take note of this statement:
Every day, we should make positive declarations over our lives. We should say things like, 'I am blessed, I am prosperous, I am healthy, I am talented, I am creative.' When we do that, we are building up our self -image. As those words permeate your heart and mind, especially your subconscious mind, eventually they will begin to change the way you see your self. The scriptures say, 'with our tongue, we can either bless or curse our life.'
This application falls flat when one reads James 3... it is not speaking about ‘speaking positive or negatively about ones situation in life..’ and receive the out come of such a word. The only reality that these kinds words will lead to is one self delusion, self absorbed, and egotistical; cause you will believe that the bible is all about you; and not about Christ.
Now lets consider what James 3 actually says in context s owe can determine if this man has correctly handled it:
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
What they have assumed from a single verse is that bible is teaching this "word of faith" heresy; when in fact, it is speaking to quite another issue entirely. Firstly, James here is speaking of the same issue that Paul addresses in 1 Timothy 3, but not in the exact same manner. The key terms is 'teach' one should not assume this position if he is not willing to abide by the divinely reveal terms and conditions: 1 of which is he must be able to teach the bible accurately 'right dividing' 'correctly handling' the word of truth. Second, the use of the tongue and cursing or blessing: it is not referring some mystical thing whereby you can create a reality that exhibits those traits. It is in fact, speaking to a different matter entirely... the act of judgement. A good sound judgement can be a blessing on a people; and negative false judgement can be a curse on a people.
(7) Everywhere Jesus went, he saw potential in people that they didn't see in themselves. He didn't focus on their weakness or faults. He saw them the way they could become. For example, the disciple peter had many rough edges. He was hot tempered, loud, bombastic, and impetuous, but that didn't deter Jesus. Jesus didn't say, "forget it, peter. I'm going to find somebody else a little more refined than you." Instead, Jesus worked with peter to bring out the best in him. It was in there, he just had to get it out. Interestingly, peter name literally meant "pebble" or "small stone." However, Jesus saw so much more in peter. He said, 'I'm going give you a new name. Your new name is going to be Cephus, which means "a rock." In other words, God said, You are a pebble right now, but when i', finished withy you. You're going to be a rock, you're going to be strong, solid and secure. (Matthew 16)
Here is one of the most bizarre claims that these preachers have made about Jesus and humanity, if they knew the bible they would never have made this claim. There is not a single example where Jesus saw "potential" in people. In fact, he saw quite the opposite extreme, here is one example of a great many:
Are even you still lacking in understanding?” He asked. “Don’t you realise that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. These are the things that defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” (Matthew 15:16-20)
Here we have Christ's own words about the inherent evil of humanity; which he came to redeem. This is what Jesus saw every day, it is not enough to make a claim; there needs to be same real tangible evidence to make it stick.
The human heart due to the depravity of man is pure wicked; this is seen in the fact, that Jesus lines up with the prophets in this condemnation of mankind. (Isaiah 59, Jeremiah 17: 5-10, Ezekiel (whole book). Therefore, these preachers have not been telling the truth about what Christ saw.
Here is one of their assertions in which they speak of Peter:
For example, the disciple peter had many rough edges. He was hot tempered, loud, bombastic, and impetuous, but that didn't deter Jesus. Jesus didn't say, "forget it, peter. I'm going to find somebody else a little more refined than you." Instead, Jesus worked with peter to bring out the best in him. It was in there, he just had to get it out.
These preachers makes the claim that Peter was "hot tempered, loud, bombastic..." and yet never gives any scripture to support this idea. In fact, Peter being the eldest believer at this time; he may have been quite the opposite of this claim. But even my claim to this point is not supported. They both are mere opinions.
Then to say that Jesus just had 'to work on him' I am not sure what exactly this assertion is really trying to indicate. For it makes no sense, it is mere speculation.
Next they try to make a case on Matthew 16 :13-20, but it fails, here is what they say:
Interestingly, peter name literally meant "pebble" or "small stone." However, Jesus saw so much more in peter. He said, 'I'm going give you a new name. Your new name is going to be Cephus, which means "a rock." In other words, God said, You are a pebble right now, but when i', finished with you. You're going to be a rock, you're going to be strong, solid and secure.
When handling a text or basing your case on a text make sure you handle it correctly, for it is easy to make mistakes like the one in this assertion. Notice what he says "I'm going to give you a new name, your new name is going to be Cephus." They have put this mistake out in book without double checking it for it's accuracy.
Here I don't know if this was a mistake or if there was something more sinister at work. But anyway here is the text in full:
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But you,” He asked them, “who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” And Jesus responded, “Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven.” And He gave the disciples orders to tell no one that He was the Messiah. (Matthew 16:13-20)
Here we have the full text, and what we learn is the following points: (1) Simon was his name, Peter was the name that Jesus gave him. This tells us that Simon (Cephus) was not the given name and Peter (Petros) was. A very significant factor as you claim "Cephus means rock". (2) this major mistake reveal an even worse error in his thinking. Jesus did not change his name because of something in him, but based on the revealed confession “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” This confession which receive Christ blessing is the very thing that Christ would build his church upon.
At this point we have seen how a little bit of altering the scripture to fit a theory about personal worth has in actual reality done more damage to their case than it has done good.
(8) Obviously, these are relatively minor issues, but the same principal applies to matters of more significance. When you cover a person's weaknesses and go the extra mile to keep the strife out of your home, you are sowing a seed for God to do a work in that other person. Remember: you cannot change people, only God can . You can harp on that person all day long, but your comments will only serve to make matters worse. The result will bring more more strife and more division. Nothing will drive the peace out of your home quicker than constant criticism. Similarly, you can disrupt the atmosphere in your workplace by incessant gripping, snipping, and having a critical attitude. The bible teaches, "we need to adapt & adjust in order to keep the peace" It doesn't say that other people should adapt & adjust to us. No, if we are going to have peace, we have to be willing to change. (Romans 12:16)
Here we have an amazing statement, which makes one central point, God is limited only to what man allows him to do. Notice his words:
Obviously, these are relatively minor issues, but the same principal applies to matters of more significance. When you cover a person's weaknesses and go the extra mile to keep the strife out of your home, you are sowing a seed for God to do a work in that other person. Remember: you cannot change people, only God can
One should take note of the central point behind this quotation. It says, “if you ...” in this we see that Joel is just advocating another thing, another law for the “believer” of his message do; to which they must do. And this is passed off as if it is what God want us to do, in order for God to do anything at all. It is a sham. God does not depend on anyone to do his great works, he does it independently. Notice the following passages:
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Psalms 33: 6-11)In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him. A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.(Psalms 21:1-2)Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. (Psalms 115: 1-3)I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. (Psalms 135: 5-7)
In these few texts God tells us through his chosen vessels gives us a common theme “The Lord does whatever he pleases” God is stating that God's ways are far more supreme than man's, and he does not depend on man to get his glory; although he has chosen through mere man that this glory will be realised. And when he does something, he does it independently of our being; even when it came to creation of the universe. It never was to be seen as something to give us comfort but to bring GOD GLORY.
Therefore, when they state: “When you cover a person's weaknesses and go the extra mile to keep the strife out of your home, you are sowing a seed for God to do a work in that other person.” they are seriously mistaken in this abomination, God does not wait upon you to make a move in order for him to do his work. This is unbiblical, untenable and damn right heretical.
The only scripture they can point to make his case is the following,
Nothing will drive the peace out of your home quicker than constant criticism.
First of all, there is nothing wrong with criticism if it is a justified rebuke, consider the biblical mandate for such an action. 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus give us the place to give just critical examinations of what people say in the name of God. But notice the back hand way he assumes “criticism... destroys the peace in families, and disrupts the atmosphere of work.” No, it in fact, gives us stronger relationship with people, when we have done wrong.
Second, the scripture quoted in support does not in reality support any such notion. Here are the words:
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. (Romans 12; verses 14-16)
Upon reading these few verses, one is immediately drawn to the fact that it is promoting fellowship of the saints, “Live in harmony with one another.” It is impossible to get “we need to adapt & adjust in order to keep the peace" from this text. It just has no place in this wonder section of scripture.
My question at this point is this : Do these teacher’s teaching in their sermons or in their books serve (1) unity and fellowship of the saints like the bible does at this text. (2) Or does it promote self-centred, self absorbed falsehood or to put it as the text does “conceited.”
(9) I know people who have gotten a divorce all because they stayed stirred up about something equally as silly or ultimately insignificant. They allowed the sore to fester, and before long were living at each other's throats. Deep down inside, they may really love each other, but through the years, they allowed strife to drive a wedge into their relationship. Jesus said, "a house divided is continually being brought to destruction and it won't stand." Notice, if you allow strife into your relationship, it will be brought to destruction. .... The bible says, "to him that knows what is right and doesn't do it, then it is sin." So often we want the other person to change. (Mark 3:25, James 4:17)
Here is another example of misrepresentation of the biblical text, but before we get there, lets consider the main point. It says:
I know people who have gotten a divorce all because they stayed stirred up about something equally as silly or ultimately insignificant. They allowed the sore to fester, and before long were living at each other's throats. Deep down inside, they may really love each other, but through the years, they allowed strife to drive a wedge into their relationship.
Here is the most unhelpful statement to be put into a book; it says, people who have gotten a divorce over insignificant matters. Yet it is his role as a pastor to correctly teach the central importance of marriage, and how God hates divorce; and only on two basis' can a divorce be permitted .. 1) in the case of death. 2) in the case of adultery.
Therefore, the bible if it is the authority in which these people truly stood (this is not stated) then they must be willing to submit their issues to the word of God and allow it to be the central balance in all matters. But since Joel does not have the first clue in what the bible actually teaches, he is stuck in limbo, trying to speak on an issue that he has no authority to do so.
Now lets consider the two texts being used:
Jesus said, "a house divided is continually being brought to destruction and it won't stand." Notice, if you allow strife into your relationship, it will be brought to destruction. .... The bible says, "to him that knows what is right and doesn't do it, then it is sin." So often we want the other person to change
Here we have a classic example of quoting a passage and misidentifying the subject at hand. In the case of Mark 3:
And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.” So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
Here we have the full context of this portion of scripture: and what we learn is something far different to what these preachers propose by citing one verse, it is in fact, discussing Christ's miraculous nature; and the charge of him being demon possessed. And this is the motivation for what Christ states, “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand.” He is saying that if it were the case, that he were demon possessed then he would not be able to command the demon, he would have authority over evil.
It is therefore, more difficult to see a connection to marriage from this context; baring in mind the fact that marriage is something which honours and represents Christ on this earth. Even based on the the second text, one can see a blatant misrepresentation... it is dealing the sin of boast about having tomorrow when you may not.
(10) Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived. His book of wisdom encouraged a husband to look his wife in the eyes and tell her. "There are many beautiful women in the world, but you excel them all.' Solomon started his day off praising and encouraging his wife you can imagine how our relationships would improve if we'd start complimenting our wives like that. Some women haven't had a compliment in years, not because they are undeserving, but because they are not appreciated. All they hear is what they are doing wrong. How the dinner wasn't any good. The kids are too loud. Listen carefully to the tone of voice you use with your spouse. Are you complaining all the time & telling her what she's not doing right? Or are you doing like Solomon did. Blessing, encouraging and uplifting that woman? (Proverbs 30: 29)
Here is a classic blunder in that he quotes a single verse from a proverb. And fails to note 2 things:
Firstly, that it was not Solomon who authored or even spoke these words. Here is the wider context:
The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him. Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb! Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers! Do not spend your strength on women, your vigour on those who ruin kings.(Proverbs 31: 1-3)
In this above section we have the person who spoke and wrote these words down identified for us it was King Lemuel, and not Solomon. This section can be classed as plea for one to guard his heart from women who can be lethal to his position. In fact, they can be deadly to his place of honour before both God and man. On top of this, we must press the issue of assuming what people thought when it says, “Solomon started his day off praising and encouraging his wife you can imagine how our relationships would improve if we'd start complimenting our wives like that.” While it is a great idea to give your wife some attention, it is not a good idea to state something based on a false ideal.
Secondly, even with just this one verse; they still misunderstand and misapply it. Here is the wider context:
Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate
While there certainly is a contrast being made; it is not the one that they are trying to make. He said that, the proverb is saying all women are view in an equal balance, but one in particular surpasses them all. When this is not at all the case, the contrast being made is between a disobedient wife and an obedient wife. A godly wife and a ungodly wife. A wife who despise her inherent value as one who has the fear of the lord, and one who loves her inherent value as one who fears the Lord. For in such a wife, a husband can find the perfect creature God has given to him. One who is pure at heart and has quite spirit.
