In this article, our goal is lay out a case as to why the Purpose Driven Life and all it seeker sensitive— purpose orientated systematised churches; are in fact, seen as abominations in the New Testament context of what is defined as a Church in the first place. And second what they are to preach and teach as the central point of the church ministry.
Consider the following teachings from the scriptures as a basis of how we are to arrive at the proper boundaries:
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:1-5)
solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry. (2 Timothy 4: 1-5)
From these passages and many similar ones to these we are given the sound instructions as to what the Pastor(s) of Christ’s Church are instructed to do as the teachers of the church and the one thing they are not meant to do is to teach their own ideals and life tips as many of these people tend to do. So now, what are these teachers meant to do:
First, Care for the souls of those they have been charged to do as the Apostle states in the first passage above. This is an extra-ordinary position that reveals the Christ centred “example” that is to be demonstrated in array of fashions but in the most important one by his continual right handling of the God-breathed word of truth as Paul would later teach us Second, the nature of preaching is to be “ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.” Each of these things can be expound at great length; but in this point, it is not necessary. our point here is to highlight that it is all focused on “preach the word;” which is also called “the word of truth”
When sound biblical principals are abandoned and highly dubious tactics are favoured as a way to present something that is an easy way to gain more people, we are told of its necessary out come: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” And that is the case with all such “churches.”
1. contradictory statements about the books purpose:
The very first words found in the first chapter of this book “Purpose Driven life” are these following on what people are trying to find the answer too— we read:
The search for the purpose of life has puzzled people for thousands of years. That's because we typically begin at the wrong starting point-ourselves. We ask self-centered questions like What do I want to be? What should I do with my life? What are my goals, my ambitions, my dreams for my future? But focusing on ourselves will never reveal our life's purpose. The Bible says, "It is God who directs the lives of his creatures; everyone's life is in his power”
But then we need to consider a few of the “questions to consider” section, which is where the real point of this work comes into focus:
In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?
I know that God uniquely created me. What areas of my personality, background, and physical appearance am I struggling to accept?
Since I was made to last forever, what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?
How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?
There is absolutely no difference in what he claims is the worlds way of seeking out the answer to the question of “purpose of life” and that of what Rick Warren’s “questions to consider.” It is based on the information set out in each chapter of the book, then how can we as “believers” live out that kind of view. It is a legalistic manual.
What we have here is a clear cut law based system; in order for us to understand this— instead of focusing equal time on the Law of God and on the Gospel of Christ as any Pastor in their sermons, lectures, and even books (if they have any). But here is a clear recognisable fact that the Gospel is vacant from this manual. And in fact, what we have is pure law based humanism.
2. The Gospel-less presentation
The purpose of the preacher/teacher of the faith is to Glorify God by honouring Christ as central focus of all the teachings. Now this does not mean that you cannot teach on other bible topics; but that it must alway be with the central focus being the central focus but notice what warren does:
You must build your life on eternal truths, not pop psychology, success-motivation, or inspirational stories. The Bible says, "It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone." This verse gives us three insights into your purpose.
We must first commend the above words of Warren on at least making the claim “You must build your life on eternal truths” and no sooner in stating this does he abandon this statement. Mind you this was put towards the end of the chapter and is eclipsed by such things like
1. You discover your identity and purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you don't have such a relationship, I will later explain how to begin one.
But this statement as true as it is — does not even begin to describe how one enters into a relationship with Christ. Nor does it define what one is? And more importantly, since you have not even spent so much a line on Christ— why is this relationship even important?
For example in Chapter 3 we get the first mention of Christ— it states in the form of a question (that God will ask at the last day):
First, "What did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ?" God won't ask about your religious background or doctrinal views. The only thing that will matter is, did you accept what Jesus did for you and did you learn to love and trust him? Jesus said, 'clam the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Another example in Chapter 7 we get the second mention of Christ— it states:
God's glory is best seen in Jesus Christ. He, the Light of the world, illuminates God's nature. Because of Jesus, we are no longer in the dark about what God is really like. The Bible says, "The Son is the radiance of God's glory." Jesus came to earth so we could fully understand God's glory. "The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory ... a glory full of grace and truth.”
As we read this small section, there is of yet no reason given to even suspect such a relationship. While what is said is actually correct, there however, is no real understand of who Christ is and what he came to do. Rick Warren claims that this point will be further expound later in the book. Now if this book was all one had to even get an understanding of what the bible teaches— they would not even get the first inkling of God’s Son till chapter 3 and 7.
This very thing if this man was a pastor of the church should be the first important point. Apparently one can claim ignorance to the fact of God’s Son right unto the very last day if we take this line of thought.
3.The use of Worldly Vain Philosophy.
In the Purpose Drive Life there is an overkill in the use of worldly, unregenerate Philosophies— and even if we just take it to a logical conclusion, the Gospel truths concern man is usurped and truncated for a false shallow ever changing view based on man’s opinions.
Unless you assume a God, the question of life's purpose is meaningless. Bertrand Russell, atheist (Purpose driven life, chapter 1)
George Bernard Shaw wrote, "This is the true joy of life: the being used up for a purpose recognised by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clot of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” (Purpose driven life, Chapter 3)
As Mother Teresa said, "It's not what you do, but how much love you put into it that matters.” (Purpose driven life, chapter 16)
Apart from the issue of original sources on all these statements, which leads to one questioning Rick Warrens honesty at this point. There is a deeper issue of why he would need to include worldly philosophy as apart of his whole proposition. It is a rather bizarre tactic as this philosophy is a dead end. Beyond this, there is the issue of what the bible teaches as to what the Christian focus should be— and what such things as Christian love is.
Notice just a few passages on the topic of Worldly philosophy being the primary mantle of a Christian life and how the bible rejects the Idea completely:
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete. (2 Corinthian 10: 3-5)
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. (Colossians 2: 6-8)
It is important for us as Christian to fully live in accordance to what Christ teaches all through the Scriptures; Christian living is based on a balanced understanding and well grounded understanding of what the bible teaches. But it is here in these passage we are give the command to “be captive through philosophy and empty deception,” but we are to take “every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,” that is to say that believer are to be so throughly united in Christ that we are to expose the false and foolish presuppositions that are behind all arguments that come against the faith.
And it is the same in the case of the weak foundations of the purpose driven life. We are to deal with the worldly underpinning and faulty biblical understanding of this work.
4.Exploring the five great benefits of living a purpose driven life.
In the third chapter of this book which is called “What drive your life?” He gives two parallel list of things that drive people— and while the negative things are not really the issue; they however are more plausible to be seen as symptoms of a far greater issue in man. But the purpose is not to critique the negative but rather consider the positive aspects of a “purpose driven life.” He states the following:
This forty-day journey will show you how to live a purpose driven life-a life guided, controlled, and directed by God's purposes. Nothing matters more than knowing God's purposes for your life, and nothing can compensate for not knowing them-not success, wealth, fame, or pleasure. Without a purpose, life is motion without meaning, activity without direction, and events without reason. Without a purpose, life is trivial, petty, and pointless. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 3)
The importance of the 40 days in the purpose seems to be something of foundation to the “purpose seeking” manual; but in reality has no real biblical support. But notice the fact that this is something which lead to the import of the benefits that once will enjoy because of this idea of “purpose.” He states:
- Knowing your purpose gives meaning to your life.
- Knowing your purpose simplifies your life.
- Knowing your purpose focuses your life.
- Knowing your purpose motivates your life.
- Knowing your purpose prepares you for eternity.
Now there is nothing inherently wrong with at least four of these point in some sense, although it misses the central truth that the bible teaches— the reality is that in all people who are saved, it never is because it gives them a purpose; it is in fact, that God purpose in his self glorification is demonstrated in all that takes place. In the long rune the reality is that God is the one with a purpose and not us. Now let just briefly consider point two to make some biblical application:
The first thing that we need to recognise is the the purpose driven life is not biblical; it is in fact, an anti-biblical system that has made slaves of many people who believe that they are Christian because this manual quotes the bible. The watchtower society quotes the bible as well— according to this human philosophy they must be Christians.
The second thing that we need to recognise is that this “simplified life” does not exist for Christians. All true Christians will suffer all kinds of persecution because of whom they are identified with— the Lord Jesus Christ. That is what every writer of the scripture teach even going back to the Sermon on the mount in verses 10-12, we should expect it.
5. The abuse of the bible through multiple translations.
Now I must state at the outset that I not against unseeing a number of translations when there need is there. But there is a real point of importance in the PDL that is fundamental to understanding the given presuppositions. Consider this brief reasoning for doing this:
This book contains nearly a thousand quotations from Scripture. I have intentionally varied the Bible translations used for two important reasons. First, no matter how wonderful a translation is, it has limitations. The Bible was originally written using 11,280 Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words, but the typical English translation uses only around 6,000 words. Obviously, nuances and shades of meaning can be missed, so it is always helpful to compare translations.Second, and even more important, is the fact that we often miss the full impact of familiar Bible verses, not because of poor translating, but simply because they have become so familiar! We think we know what a verse says because we have read it or heard it so many times. Then when we find it quoted in a book, we skim over it and miss the full meaning. Therefore I have deliberately used paraphrases in order to help you see God's truth in new, fresh ways. English- speaking people should thank God that we have so many different versions to use for devotional reading. (Purpose driven life, Appendix 3)
Now notice the reasoning given (1) translations do not always capture a particular point, meaning or saying very well. (2) and then because we have a familiarity of certain passage, and can miss something because of the use of poor translations. But this does not lead to the kind of loose cannon approach that Warren has to adopt in his book. He, Warren, uses a some very good translations and yet these are eclipsed by many, many atrocious perversions and translations.
But we must ask if there is a clearly outlined translation in all the ones used:
For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible,. . . everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. Colossians 1:16 (Msg)
Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life.’ Romans 8:6 (Msg)
Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.” Luke 9: 24 (Msg)
God's wisdom ... goes deep into the interior of his purposes.... It's not the latest message, but more like the oldest-what God determined as the way to bring out his best in us.” 1 Corinthians 2: 7 (Msg)
It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone. Ephesians 1:11 (Msg)
All the above citation are taken from the first chapter of PDL and there are only two verses that appears in this first chapter that is not from the Message. Now what is the reason I highlight this “translation?” Well, the main reason is that it is not a translation; it is perversion. It is similar to the NWT of the Jehovah Witnesses — it has no real basis in the Original languages. The Message is based on common english Vernacular; more precise it is slang.
And it is vital that we understand Warrens use of this is to clearly deceive (whether he admits it or not) people into believing this false idea of purpose. While other have take the time to show the fact that the Message and other false translation are inadequate in comparison to some sound translations, that is not my intention right here as it has been done.
6. A review of the logic behind the 40 day challenge.
At the outset of this manual on purpose, Warren sets up a false picture of what the bible teaches in regards to the central point of his mission; and gives us this 40 day purpose ideal. He states the following:
The Bible is clear that God considers 40 days a spiritually significant time period. Whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days: (Purpose driven life, introduction)
According to the above statement, Warren is so firmly convinced of this ideal that he wants people to see it as being a biblical principal. And in doing such a thing, he states that when God wanted somebody to be prepared for their purpose, “he took 40 days.” And yet, the examples he offers do not actually support this ideal. And the bible no where makes this apart of the Christian life, nor is it something any man ever went through. Now lets consider these examples:
1. Noah’s life was transformed by 40 days of rain.
2. Moses was transformed by 40 days on Mount Sinai.
3. The spies were transformed by 40 days in the Promised Land.
4. David was transformed by Goliath's 40-day challenge.
5. Elijah was transformed when God gave him 40 days of strength from a single meal.
6. The entire city of Nineveh was transformed when God gave the people 40 days to change.
7. Jesus was empowered by 40 days in the wilderness.
8. The disciples were transformed by 40 days with Jesus after his resurrection.
Here we see this error of the PDL being repeated 8 times as if to make it seem even more true, than it actually is. What we have in these examples is not about people finding their purpose, quite often they already know their their mission even before these supposed trials come upon them. In fact, with the exception of the last 2 for obvious reason, the other 6 were shadows or types of Christ’s own work.
First, in the case of Noah, we are told was “a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God (Genesis 6:9). That tells us that He was already in God’s guidance before the time of the 40 days of Rain which was judgement on the ungodly. Second, in the case of Moses, we are told in Exodus 3 that God give him his mission to redeem the people of Israel from bondage. Third, the Spies had their mission put in jeopardy for only 2 returned.
All of the said examples are not just individual example of God working in their lives in different ways— they are all typological pictures of Christ in his whole ministry as well. Christ is the bigger reality of all of these smaller pictures. Like a collage. The bible, on the other hand makes it clear that Sanctification does not take a mere 40 days— but the whole life of a Christian. Take this one passage for example:
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5: 16-26)
Now in these words that I put before you, my intention is to show that there are two kinds of living: (1) that by which one lives under his flesh, or by the nature of sin. (2) that by which one lives under the Spirit, or by the New nature caused by the Spirit. In the first, we are told, it leads to number of sinful deeds and practices. In the second, we are told, it leads to one primary fruit that is seen in a manner of outlooks.
Now the question that needs to be considered here: does the 40 days of finding your purpose lead one to ignore the biblical reality that it is the Spirit that produce the single purpose of all believers in favour of a work based ideology.
7.What is the purpose of doctrine in this system.
Here is a subject that the bible is abundantly clear on, it is a central part of all the scripture itself. If we we tally up just the New Testament to see how it teats the subject of “Doctrine-practice” it would be 80-20% to this point. Now if we consider two letters Romans and Ephesians alone, there would be 80-20, 50-50. Therefore, it is a clear reality that no matter the Christian literature this fact will be one thing that weighs heavily on its content as it will in all honesty.
But when it comes to the PDL there is quite a unique reality— one could see it as what JC Ryle states in his work “warnings to the church.” He states,
Let us understand what we mean when we speak of the ‘doctrine of Pharisees and of the Sadducees.’ (a) The doctrine of the Pharisees may be summed up in three words,— they are formalists, tradition-worshippers, and self righteous. …..(b) The doctrine of the Sadducees, on the other hand, may be summed up in three words,— free-thinkers, scepticism, and rationalism. (JC Ryle, Warnings…., Page 48-49)
Now these are very apt words in this regard, to make it even more simple these groups were known for their extreme beliefs of the opposing views. In one case, it was the addition of Laws unto what was already there. In the Second, it was the subtraction of things that were clearly spoken of. And now in the case of the PDL, we have seen the first kind of ideal being made with regards to additions of laws. But here we have other extreme, the exclusion of important doctrine in the Christian faith.
What the PDL does is reduces the grandness of Salvation to a mere trust in some fuzzy type of Ideal of Jesus— consider the following examples:
While life on earth offers many choices, eternity offers only two: heaven or hell. Your relationship to God on earth will determine your relationship to him in eternity. If you learn to love and trust God's Son, Jesus, you will be invited to spend the rest of eternity with him. On the other hand, if you reject his love, forgiveness, and salvation, you will spend eternity apart from God forever. (Purpose driven life, Chapter4)
First, believe. Believe God loves you and made you for his purposes. Believe you're not an accident. Believe you were made to la: forever. Believe God has chosen you to have a relationship with Jesus, who died on the cross for you. Believe that no matter what you've done, God wants to forgive you. Second, receive. Receive Jesus into your life as your Lord and Saviour. Receive his forgiveness for your sins. Receive his Spirit, who will give you the power to fulfil your life purpose. The Bible says, "Whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever!" Wherever you are reading this, I invite you to bow your head and quietly whisper the prayer that will change your eternity: `Jesus, I believe in you and I receive you." Go ahead. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 7)
Of course, sincerity alone is not enough; you can be sincerely wrong. That's why both spirit and truth are required. Worship must be both accurate and authentic. God-pleasing worship is deeply emotional and deeply doctrinal. We use both our hearts and our heads. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 13)
In the above quotes, we have what we might call the PDL version of what the Gospel is. Now we must note that the book does give information on some true points: (1) the Trinity. (2) Christ died on the cross and for mans sins. (3) a major emphasis on Sanctification. However, this is all eclipsed by the fact that there is no in-depth discussions on any of these points; nor even on other doctrine like the doctrines of the Atonement: justification, penal substitution, propitiation, double imputation, reconciliation.
Beyond this, we do not even get any understanding on the other truths: Mans condition before God as depraved sinners, God eternal election, reprobation, Regeneration, repentance and faith, the calling of God. And then even adoption and glorification. None of any of these truths are ever spoken of at all.
8. The purpose makeshift study groups.
The PDL on several occasions makes it clear that Warrenites are to abandon the bible in these study groups; and instead, they are to teach from the pages of “this book” meaning the PDL. The scheme or system that has been made central to this human philosophy is as follows: First, in the main sermon what you have is cultural framed, psychological, philosophical study on many fronts. In the worst cases, they are self centred pet talks on why what is being preached whether it is humanistic or a passage of scripture — it is to preach yourself into the context and/or reading everyone else but Christ into the text. Second, due to the fact that the service has no biblical parameters, the pastor become a head of the corporate system. And then the leaders of the group become unqualified and unbiblical pastors for an evening.
Now lets consider somethings that Warren has to say on the matter of small groups:
If you are a member of a small group or class, I urge you to make a group covenant that includes the nine characteristics of biblical fellowship: We will share our true feelings (authenticity), encourage each other (mutuality), support each other (sympathy), forgive each other (mercy), speak the truth in love (honesty), admit our weaknesses (humility), respect our differences, (courtesy), not gossip (confidentiality), and make group a priority (frequency). When you look at the list of characteristics, it is obvious why genuine fellowship is so rare. It means giving up our self-centredness and independence in order to become interdependent. But the benefits of sharing life together far outweigh the costs, and it prepares us for heaven. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 19)
I cannot overstate the value of being a part of a small Bible study discussion group. We always learn from others truths we would never learn on our own. Other people will help you see insights you would miss and help you apply God's truth in a practical way. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 24)
Keeping these five purposes in balance is not easy. We all tend to over emphasise the purposes we feel most passionate about and neglect the others. Churches do the same thing. But you can keep your life balanced and on track by joining a small group for accountability, by regularly evaluating your spiritual health, by recording your progress in a personal journal, and by passing on what you learn to others. These are four important activities for purpose-driven living. If you are serious about staying on track, you will need to develop these habits. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 39)
I strongly urge you to gather a small group of friends and form a Purpose-Driven Life Reading Group to review these chapters on a weekly basis. Discuss the implications and the applications of each chapter. Ask "So what?" and "What now?" What does this mean for me, my family, and our church? What am I going to do about it? Paul said, "Put into practice what you learned." In appendix 1, I have prepared a list of discussion questions for your small group or Sunday school class to use. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 39)
Now as a preface to this issue: there is nothing wrong with small fellowship groups whose sole intent is to worship God, and study the Word of God. And in most cases, have a study based on the Sermon from the Sunday. That is a vital thing to put forth as a way to grow in grace. But the issue in this case, however, is not the same issue— notice Warren’s words “Purpose-Driven Life Reading Group to review these chapters on a weekly basis.” He has the purpose of leading people astray; even though he does not want to come out in such clear words. But these very words are enough to make it clear as day, what is it give to unbelievers not the gospel, but personal stories and “this book,” PDL, Chapter 38. This is the mess one gets in with this system. This book in some message become a replacement for the bible.
Now what does the bible teach on what the believer must do when witnessing:
But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Here is the Christian commission of spreading the Gospel. There is a primary focus being displayed in these words regarding the Apostles and disciples of that time. A secondary focus is on all Christians down history. And there are a number of points that we must take note of: First, we are to “make disciples of all nations” we are to bring the gospel to all Men, so that the Apostolic teaching can bring about the stated goal of producing believers. That is the first important foundation. Second, we are to “baptise” them as a sign of their union to Christ, and as declaration before God of their obedience, and it is to be done in a triune application. That is the second important foundation. Third, we are to “teaching them to observe all that I commanded you;” now this is a great point that is to seen in two ways: (a) in the manner of the evangelistic missions in a small measure. (b) in the manner of exegetical, exposition that all believers will gain spiritual edification and growth. This is the third important foundation.
And it is by these means that Christ “remains” in the church, in a central fashion. Obviously, he is there in all true believers, but his presence is abundant in these stated things.
9. Purpose Driven Fellowship vs Biblical Orientated Fellowship.
Here we have one of the most important and central consequences of a truly ordered church. That of course, being the the heart of biblical truth— it was Christ who said that “Men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” That is a vitally important factor. But in the PDL system we find a very distorted reality in the context of what role “fellowship” plays in the whole issue.
Notice what Warren states in his manual PDL on this matter:
- In real fellowship people experience authenticity.
- In real fellowship people experience mutuality.
- In real fellowship people experience sympathy.
- In real fellowship people experience mercy.
Now these are Warren’s points on fellowship— yet none of them are in error for they are all indeed true points. However, the PDL does not give us a very balanced understanding of what fellowship— it is rather focused on the consequences of fellowship rather than the actual activity of fellowship. Before we consider the bible pattern of this issue, there is a need to highlight the fact that the first principal as true as it is; warren, misses a vital cog in the chain (so to speak), in this principal, he misses the scriptures as a vital part of what makes fellowship ‘authentic’ as it states.
Now notice the bible pattern of worship and even fellowship:
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2: 42-47)
In this context we are given some important information which we must contend. Luke tells us how the early Church gather together to worship the triune God, it was done by: (a) devoting themselves to apostles doctrine (teaching). (b) and to fellowship. (c) breaking the bread and to prayer. But, nonetheless, the second aspect “fellow-ship” cannot be truly authentic apart from the other elements being apart of the worship; and more in particular, that of the apostolic doctrine being very heart of it all.
Consider another passage for clarity on this issue of fellow-ship:
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. (Colossians 3: 12-17)
Not to get to deep into this, the point in the context is simply fellowship— it can be enjoined on all believer in the Church setting or in every day life where there are a number of believers gathered. But notice these really beautiful words by the Apostle Paul: “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” That is to say, let the truth of Christ live and abide in you. It is done through the doctrines of Christ as the Apostle taught; and by means of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.
But this is all vacant in the PDL as we have witnessed with the issue of doctrine. It was swiftly put aside.
10. Purpose driven Christian vs the Biblically defined Christian.
Warren in the 38th chapter of the PDL offers what he considers to be the definitional point of what being a Christian is— the terminology being utilised is “world-class Christian” in as much as an ordinary believer “worldly Christian.” In this lingo, Warren wants us to see two kinds of Christians; in the first place, he wants us to see that one is a worldly Christian. Then in the second place, he seeks to show that this other type of Christian is the perfect kind.
However, the bible reveals that there are two kinds of disciples. In the first place, there are false disciples who do not truly believe and will fall away after a time. And then the second kind, who are in fact, true Christians who will persevere through all trials. Before we get into these areas, let us consider this chapters statements:
Worldly Christians look to God primarily for personal fulfillment. They are saved, but self-centred. They love to attend concerts and enrichment seminars, but you would never find them at a missions conference because they aren't interested. Their prayers focus on their own needs, blessings, and happiness. It's a "me-first" faith: How can God make my life more comfortable? They want to use God for their purposes instead of being used for his purposes
world-class Christians know they were saved to serve and made for a mission. They are eager to receive a personal assignment and excited about the privilege of being used by God. World-class Christians are the only fully alive people on the planet. Their joy, confidence, and enthusiasm are contagious because they know they're making a difference. They wake up each morning expecting God to work through them in fresh ways.
In these above statements, we have Warren’s definitions of what these two kind of Christians are (despite the fact that the bible knows nothing of this issue). But we must see that in both cases, both kinds of Christians “are saved” and neither on that basis can be said to be in the wrong.
Beyond this, the real issues are glaring what is described as being “worldly Christians” is in reality not a Christian at all, but an unregenerate sinner masquerading as if they were a Christian— much is the case with all purpose driven church goers. Now what of the other kind “world-class Christian” despite the definition, there seems to be little difference in the titles “worldly” and “world-class” they both are trapped in the world system and therefore, are not true Christians.
Now let us consider the points of what makes one a “world-class Christian.”
- Shift from self-centred thinking to other-centred thinking.
- Shift from local thinking to global thinking.
- Shift from "here and now" thinking to eternal thinking.
- Shift from thinking of excuses to thinking of creative ways to fulfil your commission.
These are the four things that makes one a “world-class Christian,” while we need to admit that they’re not entirely false in at least the transitions on 3 of them. This fact, however, does not give Warren an excuse for his inaccuracy of the reality of the truths of the Faith. He, Warren, makes no distinction of things man does to achieve a false ideal of peace with God (laws) and that of the reality of what the triune God does in the believer in bringing them to faith. And in the end, what we are left with is another kind of works-righteousness system that can only lead to Hell.
Now what is missing in all of this the biblical pattern pertaining to salvation- which is:
Election (God choice of the individual to Salvation from eternity); Regeneration (The Spirit’s act of renewal and cleanSing them of sin) which leads to Repentance and Faith; Definite atonement (that the believer is actually in Christ by virtue of Christ’s obedience and work on the Cross); Sanctification (the act of continual growth in Christ in order to be conformed to Christ’s image); And finally, Glorification (the full application of salvation as a means of being fully redeemed people of God).
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:1-9)
All the above steps of Salvation are clearly laid in these word of Apostle Peter as they are in all other biblical books. What makes this a real treatment of salvation is that it is firstly a a brief introduction in the first 2 verses; then that is followed by an expansion of these truth in the next 7 verses. And this is the wonder truth of Christian salvation that is vacant from the PDL manual which if it were a guide to how a Christian is made and to be living— it would need to be evidenced in a strong manner, but it is not even mentioned.
11. SHAPE: a devastating application of the Spiritual Gifts.
The PDL in an attempt to discern what gifts one has offers the following statement as a means of establishing his teaching on the gifts. But this is a very flawed idea because it assumes something that we should never begin to do: play God with the Spiritual gifts. Notice what Warren has to state:
God formed every creature on this planet with a special area of expertise. Some animals run, some hop, some swim, some burrow, and some fly. Each has a particular role to play, based on the way they were shaped by God. The same is true with humans. Each of us was uniquely designed, or "shaped, 'to do certain things. Before architects design any new building they first ask, "What will be its purpose? How will it be used?" The intended function always determines the form of the building. Before God created you, he decided what role he wanted you to play on earth. He planned exactly how he wanted you to serve him, and then he shaped you for those tasks. You are the way you are because you were made for a specific ministry. The Bible says, "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 30)
Notice in this attempt to make his case in attempting to making the “spiritual gifts” something that you have to desire or force God into giving you by means of an internal search for qualities that can be seen helpful traits or things that draw the spiritual gifts to the forefront. Warren, first mixes categories trying to make his point— the natural abilities of all creature are built into the particular creatures make up; whereas the spiritual gifts are thing God gives the believer to help them adapt to the new life in Christ. Second, he misapplies a single verse of scripture in order to deceive his audience, and it has been a common thing in this movement. He takes Ephesians 2:10 (out of it context) and makes it seem as though it is speaking to the natural ability of all creatures- when it is not in the slightest.
Here is what the text actually states:
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. (Ephesians 2:4-10)
With this verse (10) placed back into its fuller context, one can see that it is not a verse that supports Warren thesis in the slightest fashion. It is talking about the good works that God has predetermined as a part of his elect believers. And not those who are outsider the faith as Warren is trying to mislead people to believe. Now let us come to the 5 qualities that he outlines:
The Bible says you are "wonderfully complex.' You arc a combination of many different factors. To help you remember five of these factors, I have created a simple acrostic: SHAPE. In this chapter and the next we will look at these five factors, and following that, I will explain how to discover and use your shape. Whenever God gives us an assignment, he always equips us with what we need to accomplishit. This custom combination of capabilities is called your SHAPE:Spiritual gifts Heart Abilities Personality Experience (Purpose driven life, Chapter 30)
So here we have these five qualities being laid out as a given. The problem in this is that it seeks to establish something that the bible does not even begin to address; therefore, what Warren is doing is teaching a false teaching and claiming it is biblical sound. I would love to consider all five but there is no need— so what will be done is only one will be considered here.
Warren, first makes a vital point that is correct in the following words:
God gives every believer spiritual gifts to be used in ministry. These are special God-empowered abilities for serving him that are given only to believers. The Bible says, "Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit.” You can't earn your spiritual gifts or deserve them-that's why they are called gifts! They are an expression of God's grace to you. "Christ has generously divided out his gifts to us." Neither do you get to choose which gifts you'd like to have; God determines that. Paul explained, "It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” (Purpose driven life, Chapter 30 “spiritual drifts”)
The point being that the Spiritual gifts are not given by one forcing God’s hand; these words are directly contradicted by Warren later on. Consider the following words on what he states we are to do to discern our gifts:
Begin by assessing your gifts and abilities. Take a long, honest look at what you are good at and what you're not good at. Paul advised, "Try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities." Make a list. Ask other people for their candid opinion. Tell them you're searching for the truth, not fishing for a compliment. Spiritual gifts and natural abilities are always confirmed by others. If you think you are gifted to be a teacher or a singer and no one else agrees, guess what? If you want to know if you have the gift of leadership, just look over your shoulder! If no one is following you, you're not a leader.Ask questions like these: Where have I seen fruit in my life that other people confirmed? Where have I already been successful? Spiritual gift tests and ability inventories can have some value, but they are limited in their usefulness. (Purpose driven life, Chapter 32)
As we have previously seen that Warren mixed categories “natural abilities” and “spiritual gifts.” None of these things are the same; therefore, such an instruction as “take a long, honest look at what you are good at and what you're not good at.” Is in reality a lost on all fronts, you do not need to search out the gift you have been given — it will be evident as and when God determines it. Now while some may manifest straight away; other will take some time to be made known.
