so from this we see that we are indeed dealing with a universalism of some kind .. one that brushes the clear evidence of john 6, Romans 8, Ephesians 1 and even Hebrews 7 -10 aside in favour of a less polished understanding
and it also presents a failure Messiah .. who tries to save but can not truly save .. the bible knows nothing of this
limited atonement ... since it is God's purpose to save a special people for himself, and he has chosen to do so only through the perfect sacrifice of JESUS CHRIST, CHRIST came to give his life a ransom for many so as to save his people from their sins the intention of Christ in his cross work was to save his people specifically, therefore, CHRISTS sacrifice was perfect and complete, for it actually accomplishes perfect redemption
here we only have 4 verses given as refutation of this position .. and lets check to see if they are been honest in the attempts
1 ... All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him, the iniquity of us all.
there is nothing in this particular verse saying all people will be saved as it only shows that all have been effected by the sin of Adam, and all continually follow suit
even when we get to the words "us all" .... just whom it is in view .. is the entire humanity or is the sins of those whom he came to redeem .. this verse does not address the subject of whom it was for but the fact that it was true atonement, not a hypothetical or theoretical one
now when we want to know whom this atonement is for, and specifically from Isaiah 53 we only need to turn to verses 11 -12
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
here we see Isaiah is making the point that Gods true atonement in his son .. is not for every single living soul on this earth, but is for a specified group called the many .. which we see the lord Jesus takes as his own saying in Matthew 20 :28 "even as the son of man came not to be served, but to serve his life as a ransom for many"
so when you want to know what Isaiah means by " us all" we only need to look to verses 11 -12 for the answer, and the answer given by God .. is the many .. not all people everywhere
what the writer of this article i am critiquing needs to do .. is prove that the "us all" is in fact speaking of all people everywhere as he has not giving any real argument to show this is the case .. just the assumption
2 --- 1 timothy 4 :10 "For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all people, especially of those who believe"
here we are to do some work in understanding Paul's point in this verse and to do this we need to understand the whole passage more
6 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. 7 But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; 8 for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. 10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers
now lets examine the passage of 1 timothy 4 .. to reveal the really intention of pauls words and not just assume something to which paul never meant in any way , shape or form
now lets examine the passage of 1 timothy 4 .. to reveal the really intention of pauls words and not just assume something to which paul never meant in any way , shape or form
In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following
now with this breif over veiw into what paul has in mind in the words as follows " In pointing out these things to the brethren" ... timothy's role was to build the saints up .. and encourage them to be godly men .. and the only way this is to be seen is in this manner as these word discribe .. "constantly nourished on the words of the faith" .. this could refer to the natural manner of teaching and most like does ... but the next point is more direct to the previous passages mentioned .. "sound doctrine" or as we can refer good and proper teachings which timothy had been following .. this has to be passed down
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness, for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance
the first point is rather interesting .. fables ... old women ... commonly seen in all times and societies .. that the elderly love to tell some stories .. and we as believers are to have nothing to do with .. but there is a possitive thing in this " discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness" .. this can be seen as refocus your attention what is godliness
seen in the next sentence in these words "for bodily discipline is only of little profit" this speaks to something like the temporal outcome of of traning ur self in and for some important event .. or test .. it is only usful for a while it is not lasting .. and in the next words "but godliness is profitable for all things" while one traning is limited to a point in time .. Godliness is something while transforms the whole out look in life .. and renews ur thoughts and this sentiment is seen in these words " since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come"
"It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance" ... this is a tag on the last line or two that he is using an example for the benifit of show how two different meassure can be vitally important for there singular purposes ... and this leads to the importat verse ...
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
paul comes back to the point he wants to emphesis here ... the hope we have as the redeemed ...... that the one God who shows his mercy on every single human by giving them live, prehaps saving them from different things, or even showing favour on one persons life or all persons for any reason ... but this is not due to GOD giving eternal life .. but based on his every day grace --- but here is something we come to "Savior of all men, especially of believers"
saviour of all men ... he saves all men from various situations because of his mercy and grace (mainly seen in the fact that he preserves peoples lives daily, this is an aspect of being saved)
especially of believers ... but he is the saviour in a completely unique manner to the ones he has chosen in christ .. the redeemed (promised unto the gift of eternal life) but note here that paul makes a distinction between the believers and all people, and everyday grace and salvific grace in this one sentence .. and also in the whole passage
3 -- 1 john 2 :2 "He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world"
on what basis does one make this fit the whole world as in every single person .. we are not told .. and we never will be give any real understanding into what these arminians believe this is speaking too , so i will give a brief over view
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. -- 1 john 2
in these verses we have a beautiful truth being taught about the atonement itself .. which is with in these few words "He is the propitiation for our sins" ... these few words say it all .. in christs atoning work we have true satisfaction with the LORD .. this is very important cause it means he actually makes atonement for those he atones for and not merely makes it a possiblity if we allow him
4 --- Hebrews 2 :9 "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."
remember that the bible never presents a theoretical atonement, but one that actually saves those who it was intended to saves
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous...
speaking to all believers alike, but more specifically those to which john had initail correspondence with ... "I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin" ... john has a specified group in mind .. the elect of john 6 ... the true believer of john 3 ... no matter what term it is already made the point that it is not addressed to unbelievers
john wants to give a double warning .. firstly point out that what is going reveal will be able to keep us from sinning .. but if it so happens that we fall into sin ... man (the believer) has a hope that man (the unbeliever) does not ... for we " have an advocate with the Father" .. the lord jesus christ our righteousness
this is significant cause the claim that vese 2 is universal that jesus died for the whole world ... every person is answered in verse 1 ... who are the we whom have an advocate ... with the father .. believers (the elect) or the unblievers
it is obvious that the text is not speaking of universalism, but particularity
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world
here is where the most trouble comes in ... by over looking the key phrase "propitiation for our sins" ... this is also speaking to particularity of an action .. to say it applies to every one .. as if everyone will be saved then we run into a major problem straight off ...
ask yourself does "He is the propitiation for our sins" speak to every person from johns time or is their particularity in the application .. as in only those from that time which were chosen, mean jesus word in john10 and 8 are valid "but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock" and "Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God" so the point is that the ones whom Christ saved in the first century were given to him by the father like wise this is what John is saying in this term "sins of the whole world ... Jesus truly saves those whom the father give .. from day one till now ... that is the body of christ and the world that john refers too, not every person
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous...

4 --- Hebrews 2 :9 "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."
for this one all we need to do is look at the context carefully to realise that it is not a text that help this argument
Now it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers
firstly we note that the writer is making an argument that Jesus was and is greater than the angels ... an argument which proves the divinity of the LORD, but also hold onto the fact that he became a man
we get this from these words "Now it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere -- You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour"
these words are very beautiful .. since they show both natures on a plan ... that is undeniable
next we note these words "But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone." .. this only makes one part of the argument ... what does taste death mean ... Jesus experienced death in his humanity .. it has no connection to how many it was for .. but let us get to the point which secures it
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering
what does many son mean ... every person... or those whom made atonement for .. "Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
5 --- 1 timothy 2 :4 "who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth"
as always is the point we need the context to understand people point .. and not force a false ideal on the text as this writer has done on many other texts
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ( I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth
Irresistible grace -- this is the belief that God is able to raise a spiritually dead sinner to life, when God chooses to bring one of his elect to spiritual life , this is not to say men have not resisted God grace, this doctrine speaks specifically to the grace which brings regeneration, not to individual acts of sin committed by believer or unbelievers
from this we learn that those whom Christ died for .. are brought to spiritual life first, before they are granted the gift of salvation and grace
take note that it says .. "this is not to say men have not resisted God grace" in general term every believer at some point resist Gods grace in their lives .. when we are led to do something which is uncomfortable .. say witness to someone which is of a faith that you do not know much about
but the term irresistible Grace is of a different view point ... it is actually speaking of the new birth, or the act of regeneration in a believer .. so it is not speaking to something which can be resistable or irresistible like a piece of candy .. the sovereign work of regeneration
this can be seen in john 3
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit
in this text .. we see that Jesus is speaking of a spiritual act that God preforms in a believer .. before they can be acceptable in his sight .. "kingdom of God" .. this act is called regeneration a concept john briefly out lines here for as a work the spirit of God does .. which has the goal of true saving faith in Christ .. this faith has to be granted of the person too .. it is not human born
this concept of regeneration is a theme paul speaks on more than once going through various points like the positive out come and the negative release
as in the new life we gain, and the old life we let go of
now lets deal with the selective quotes
Lamentations 3:35-36: "To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High, To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approve not."after looking at this one we see nothing corresponding to a refutation of the doctrine .. in fact this is speaking of the kind of things God accepts or rejects for a believer .. it speaks not of the regeneration of grace
Matthew 23:37: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and YE WOULD NOT!"again this is not an argument against irresistible grace or any other doctrine of grace ... but comes from a sheer ignorance of our position and the text in question
since it is a judgement text
1 of all note the people being condemned are "the Jewish leaders" .. "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in" .. here is vs 13 which is very similar and it condemns "scribes and Pharisees" .. a very vital clue .. they are keeping people from listening to the words of the LORD
2 -- who are the ones Jesus is speaking of in the text "how often would I have gathered thy children together" .. meaning there is distinction, Christ has condemn one set of people for their action of poisoning the minds of other "the children" or more commonly the student and younger generations
3 -- there is no mention of salvation in the text .. at best we can make the point that these people in question we being kept in the darkness by the teachers and pharasees ....
so Jesus wanted to have these people away from the danger that they were heading toward .. a common grace understanding ... it is not addressing every single person .. but 2 group with in the Jewish community ... false teachers and the deceived followers
4 -- there is no universality to this verse ... it is not speaking to every single person .. but a group of JEWS in Jesus time .. so at best it can only be made on the merit of a particular point ..
so this text has not been successful in the attempt of making the atonement a universal application .. and it does not even come into the view of the passage, since it is a condemnation passage and not a salvific passage
John 5:39-40: "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And YE WILL NOT come to me, that ye might have life."
this is has to be one the most interesting passages ... in trying to prove universality of the atonement, ...
There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
note that nowhere in this passage do we find any atonement language, nor do we find anything saying it would universal in application ... for this we need to go to john 6
so what is this passage about
1 -- the truthfulness of Jesus message which he had laid out in verses 19 -30 .. that Jesus and the father are in a unity that goes back before the creation came to be .. even to the point that all creation was created by and through Jesus as the pre - incarnate lord of glory .. this all point to the triune nature of God .. for the father, the son and the spirit are one in being but are 3 distinct persons
2 -- we have several witness to Christ true uniqueness and identity ... a) john the baptist, b) the works the father gave him to do c) the scriptures which testify to him, d) God the father
3 -- the reason these certain Jews did not come to him was because they were prohibited to do so, as God made clear that they wont be able to truly know who the saviour is
"Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears and understand with their heartand turn and be healed.”
and it really is this simple that because of the way Israel acted in the past -- that God deemed it fit to keep them in the dark on whom the messiah is and reveal it to those who would listen
"At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children"
4 -- Jesus himself says on 4 occasions that certain Jews were not given to him .. john 6 :36 -38, john 8 : 45 -47, john 10 : 25 -29, and john 17 : 9 -12 . and with this we can understand why that many can do all kinds of things but on the day of Judgement he will say "i never knew you" because they were not his at all
Acts 7:51: "Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always RESIST the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye."
this really shows the ignorance of the writer ..... as this one passage demonstrate a few things
Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, 46 who found favour in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
49 “‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’ 51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’ 51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
this verse from acts 7 :51 has been used to deter or undermine the 4th doctrine of grace .. irresistible grace, although this post won't be directly on the 4th doctrine as such .. for that will come .. i want to speak to this verse and give some thoughts ... on how we can understand this .. to not be against the act of regeneration which is other wise know as irresistible grace
what if there is a separate and distinct meaning to this phrase "resisting the holy spirit" .. that does not point to the typical understanding we get from an English word .. but in fact goes deeper than this
here is the passage
You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.
the phrase isolated from the passage does not have a contextual meaning, so man forces it to speak against a biblical truth of regeneration when in fact it can and most certainly is speaking of what Christ called "blaspheming the holy spirit ... note what else is said here in the context ...
"As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered," .. the sharp contrast of this act against the holy spirit .. and defilement of the prophets and the message of Christs first coming is evident
so from this we get that the point Stephen is emphasising is not that we can resist the work of the spirit , but by our words and actions we can cut off any life renewal of the spirit .. in manner of blaspheme
we can also see this in the later part of the last part of chapter 6 ...
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. 11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.” 15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel
these men could not dispute the acts and miracles Stephen was doing in the power of the spirit .. so they contrived an attack against him in form of what he said by stating "Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God" ...
so from this we can follow the passages through and come to the conclusion that not only is the modern ideal of resisting not being demonstrated in context, but that it is speaking to an entirely different thing altogether as lovers of truth we must always read in the bigger picture than read in the smaller points
the next point to mention no where in the context do we find anything about salvation being mentioned, so it is not about this ... it is speaking to God's active leading in all his peoples lives, Noah and the promises, moses and the Israelites, David and Solomon
but this can not be used to reject irresistible grace .. the act of regeneration
Proverbs 1:24-26: "Because I have called, and YE REFUSED; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh."
we must note that this is not God speaking .. it is the wisdom proverbs and to isolate the verse from the passage is dishonest and disrespectful to Gods word which is to man
Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks .. prov. 1 :20 -21
this is the introduction to this section of scripture and we find ... that the writer is referring to a personification called wisdom .. which is said to be a female "Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice" .. this is the very heart of this passages ... it is not God speaking directly as in other passages in this book .. but his wisdom in the formation of a women
a very crucial point to consider in this
then it changes from in the section ... wisdom now speak .. and based upon mans rejection of listening he says ..
"Then I would have poured out my heart to you. I would have told you what I was thinking. But you turned away from me when I called out to you. None of you paid attention when I reached out my hand."
wisdom is speaking still .. and in context .. she is pooring out her heart to some .. because they were not willing to listen
thus far there has been no salvation issue being discusse, it is wise to take note of the following section as well .... as it reveals something important
" Then you will call to me. But I won't answer. You will look for me. But you won't find me.
29 You hated knowledge. You didn't choose to have respect for the Lord.
30 You wouldn't accept my advice. You turned your backs on my warnings.
notice the complete lack of response from this wisdom, when man comes to his sense and wants to be considered worthy .. the response is one of not being interested
and the result is that the way they go about their life with complete disregard will be the very undoing of their lives
Proverbs 29:1: "He, that being often reproved HARDENETH HIS NECK, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy."
this is very strange what is the objection ... is this suppose to make some one of the reformed faith go .. oh it is so clear ... ? quoting one verse to prove something which is not even stated is hardly worth the time of day
P = PERSEVERANCE (The Bible teaches preservation of the saints; not perseverance of the saints):
if the doctrine was understood then the writer would not the mistake he has by using a title which helps the doctrine he is trying to refute from poor understanding
perseverance of the saint --- this is to emphasis the work of God (also known as eternal security) makes the point that Gods perfect work of salvation being undone.. when Christ saves one of the elect he(Christ, not the individual) will not fail to keep that person through his life and bring him into his own presence .. CHRIST is a perfect saviour
from this we learn that the title is not reflective of mans efforts of staying saved as it has been guaranteed to those who are saved that Christ will keep them ...john 6 :37 -45 "And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day"
this doctrine can be best understood as the doctrine of eternal security ... it is work of the spirit in the believers life that lead them to this great place
Jude 1: "... to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and PRESERVED in Jesus Christ..."
i do not have any disagreement with this text .. just the manner of the misapplication of the doctrine falls flat once we understand the doctrine and how this passage corresponds to it
how about this section of the letter being read as well
20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
this speaks to the perseverance to which a believer must live in the sanctity of the spirit of God .. and must be transformed to a holy living that is pleasing to the father
so while this solo verse does not disprove the truth of this doctrine, it does however diminish the false understanding the writer had presented .. even with no argument give, not that i expected one
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24: "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly: and I pray God your whole spirit and soul, and body be PRESERVED blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. "
John 10:27-29: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Fathers hand."
Colossians 3:3-4: "For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory."
Hebrews 7:25: "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
again this is presented under a misrepresentation of the doctrine ... and does not disprove or refute it ... the straw man attack is all that is being refuted, not the actually position
if the writer actually understands the position he would see that this is in line with the teaching 100 %
take john 10 :27 -29 .. does Jesus not make the distinction of whom he would perfectly save ... by saying to the Jews you are not of my flock .. mean there is a particular group, which goes back to Isaiah 53 :11 -12
CONCLUSION:
Calvinism clearly errs from the teaching of the Word of God on all 5 points of it's TULIP. The logical conclusion of Calvinism is that God is an unfair respecter of persons who chooses people to salvation, not according to any standard that He established, but arbitrarily. This strikes at the love and justice of God, contradicts the fact that Christ gave his life for ALL, and rejects man's responsibility to choose and love his Creator.
Proverbs 24:23: "... It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment."
Acts 10:34-35: "... Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him."
John 6:28-29: "... What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? ... This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.
Ephesians 2:8: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God."
and interesting but nonetheless unbiblical foundation makes this a lop sided presentation of the facts
lets consider these final remarks
"Calvinism clearly errs from the teaching of the Word of God on all 5 points of it's TULIP"
as we have demonstrated this person does not understand the doctrines he so passionately disrespects by misrepresenting them ... it is found that each point he falsely labels with a strawman understanding to which precedes to rip apart, which means none are really dealt with as i have shown
even worse is the fact that he puts verses that speak to one area under a different area like eph. 2 :8 to refute the depravity of man .. it can not be done
then he make a divide on one doctrine by taking two parts of a doctrine and playing them against each .. doctrine 5
"The logical conclusion of Calvinism is that God is an unfair respecter of persons who chooses people to salvation, not according to any standard that He established, but arbitrarily."
saying how Calvinist view the mechanic of Gods chosen as arbitrary .. does not do any favours based on the misunderstandings that are evident in this whole attempt
the second doctrine of grace ... unconditional election ... is that there is nothing, absolutely nothing in a man .. either his way of living or in whether he does good work, or even obeying the work of the law can merit a man his salvation it is as the bible teaches ..
" In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will"
we are saved by his grace ... and his will .. which is demonstrated in the atonement of his son
this is the standard that God established .. and this what all Calvinists believe
"contradicts the fact that Christ gave his life for ALL, and rejects man's responsibility to choose and love his Creator."
where is the proof of the first proposition ... "Christ gave his life for ALL" ... where is the exegesis on all the texts mentioned in this article of yours .. i saw none .. just quickfire quotes
as for the all business he died for all his elect
john 6 :37 -45
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day
here in this verse we have transition point from the divine action of the father ... to the underline reason why it is only possible for God to do this work , what we see is not as clear in the English translation .. although they are very close .. there is a distinction made on the terms of whether man has the ability to come to Christ apart from the fathers will in the holy spirit and the giving to the son .. there is a position made clear in the Greek to which we need to see ... to fully respect Christs whole point
No one can come to Me .. this is very focus that needs our full attention the underline word "can come" .. is the positive assertion to which once we add the first word "no one" ... becomes a negative demonstration no one can come ... but the Greek to this is more direct, and more straight to the point and this is it "dunamai" ... to which we find this understanding or definition "to be able, to have power" ... so when we come to the verse .. the positive affirmed position become a negative one on mans ability ... "no man is able to come to Jesus" is the most literal rendering
unless the Father who sent Me draws him .... the previous action can not happen unless the father does something to change the persons heart and character ... which is the work of the spirit ... to which the term draw refers ... the literal meaning of the Greek word here "helkó" .. means the following ideas .. "I drag, draw, pull, persuade"
in this sense we need to understand that the drawing is not a physical dragging but a spiritual renewal .. a transformation to which we refer regeneration (born again, of the spirit)
then Jesus reaffirms the promise of being lift up on the last .. eternal life (as found in vs 37, 39 -40, and 44 as it is a quintet of a re -affirmation of the reality of such a promise) check previous discussions on above verses
