Jehovah witness belief examined : does the bible prohibit blood donations

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood. --- leviticus 17 : 11

the above verses tell us something about God and his ways .. and we learn 3 things ... 1 -- that the blood is sacred to God .. and his people (the jews) should not even consume it, 2 --- in the immediate context we are specificlly being taught somethings in relation to the sacrificial and ceremonial laws ... 3 -- in the broader context and understanding of this verse .. it is by the blood of an animal that jews were forgiven their sin on a temporary basis, and that in the blood of Christ hos elect would find forgiveness of sin and redemption

Jehovah witness and the watch tower society have had a terrible history of mishandling the text of the scriptures, and commiting eisegesis of the text of scriptures .. and no matter how how noble or godly they believe they are being when following one falsely interpreted veiw on blood donation and trnsfusion .. they are being very inconsistent and are being manipulated into following a false teaching -- which can only lead to death for any one who is in need and eternal death for any one of them who deny giving blood

here i will give some statements the society has produced in various magazines over the years ... and demonstrate they have no grounds to stand upon on this matter

The Watchtower, January 15, 1961 stated "In view of the seriousness of taking blood into the human system by a transfusion, would violation of the Holy Scriptures in this regard subject the dedicated, baptized receiver of blood transfusion to being disfellowshiped from the Christian congregation?" "The inspired Holy Scriptures answer yes."

"Similarly, God's command to 'abstain from blood' rules out ingesting it by the mouth as well as through injections into the veins. Furthermore, the Bible makes it clear that the divine law was not to be ignored even during an emergency that could threaten life. (1 Sam. 14:31-35) Many of God's approved servants have been willing to face dangers and even death rather than violate Scriptural principles and their integrity to Jehovah." (The Watchtower, June 15, 1978, p.24)

here are two quotes from the watchtower .. on their view of the law in which they have misrepresented ... note the words carefully in these "'abstain from blood' rules out ingesting it by the mouth as well as through injections into the veins" they have made 2 claims here .. 1 --- by ingesting blood through the mouth ... 2 --- by having it injected through the vain. and it is here we immediately run into a troubling point .. while a is true in both the old and new .. yet the society does not explain to us the real issue at hand of why this is even presented in the old testament and new testament ... then to point b this is absolutely insufficient and inaccurate .. there is no place in leviticus 17 saying not donate blood, nor in the new testament

this leds to a bad case of reading an already established belief back into the text of scripture .. its fallacious and unwarrented to do so .. it is what we commonly term eisegesis

If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. 12 Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood.13 “Any one also of the people of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who takes in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth. 14 For the life of every creature is its blood: its blood is its life. Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off. 15 And every person who eats what dies of itself or what is torn by beasts, whether he is a native or a sojourner, shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean. 16 But if he does not wash them or bathe his flesh, he shall bear his iniquity.” (levitus 17)

here is leviticus 17 and what do we learn from this passage ... for starters these laws are ceremonial in nature and we can know this from the chapter in question as the previous passage is about "The Place of Sacrifice" .. and this theme carries on from that prospective .... we can see this from the opening words of this section in vs 11 .. "and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life." ... there is nothing in context about the permission of donating blood to save a life ... in fact if we think about what atonement is about .. is to save the life of the people it is made for ..
.
so after establishing the gross error in this belief .. if Jehovahs feel they need to fulfil this obligation that the society has placed on them as a burdon ... know this the bible does not condemn given of the blood .. in this manner .. there is one type blood giving it does condemn and that is the unjust act of slaughtering of the innocent child to false God ... but that is not the issue here ... the bible does condemn giving the blood if it is to save a life
I wish just give one last look at the law of God before we move onto some other evidences of this "abominable practice" of prohibing blood transfusion -- we once again return to livitucus to give this part a more detail understanding

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the people of Israel and say to them, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 3 If any one of the house of Israel kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, 4 and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people. 5 This is to the end that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they sacrifice in the open field, that they may bring them to the Lord, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord. 6 And the priest shall throw the blood on the altar of the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting and burn the fat for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 7 So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.8 “And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9 and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the Lord, that man shall be cut off from his people.(leviticus 17)

as i have stated in the previous part this is clearly a ceremonial passage, so that is mention in this passage pretains and relates to the sacrificial patterns that the jews had to devote their entire lives too ... this was not about something that may only occur once in a blue moon like "giving blood" which no biblical passage can be used as support for such a denial

above we have the detailed instruction of an offering with the implication attacched of the prescribed result of disobedience ... "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the people of Israel and say to them, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. If any one of the house of Israel kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man -- take note the last portion of this command / instruction after the warn ... "and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man" .. this was a neccasary act to be undertaken .. to avoid the punishment

but we also must realise the idea that this "Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood." can be turn into an unwarrented assumption that Gods people maust never donate blood .. is a big leap of logic ... for example .. where in this section of scriptures does it state one must not donate blood if it saves a life -- or how does one take words that speak to prohibition of eating unwarrent blood to denoteing blood .. this violates all scriptural tennents of study

the final point on this is how does one who violates Gods word .. ever have Gods protection or garantee of life .... now we move to a possible way of seeing how this can be carried out ... first we need to realise a lot of laws were put in place to ground, to consecrate the jews for a special relationship to God .. through the practice of following his laws ... and also we need to note the laws were put in place to make a point of how God want his own to act in accordance to his standards .. since many non jewish nation done abominal practices in the lords presence ....

just as many non jewish nations in that time made child sacrifices .. so to the jew through rebellion fell into the same satanic practices .. and jeremiah .. the blessed prophet of God made this statement in his prophey

They have turned to me their back and not their face. And though I have taught them persistently, they have not listened to receive instruction. 34 They set up their abominations in the house that is called by my name, to defile it. 35 They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

what we learn from this prophecy is a few important factors ... 1 -- the jews were capable of falling away into idolatry ... and were like any other group .. even though God has set them apart in his own covenant ... as man is evil , man will act on that evil .. and here it show this great danger .... think of ezekiel as he shows us great apostacy of jews who practiced many abominal things .. which in cluded child sacrifice, and other acts. 2 --- the result of such act of disobedience had long been made known by God to his people ... death was often the result .. as it prescibed in the law and also seen in the law .. ( leviticus 18 :20, 20 : 1 - 9) on child sacrifice .... but we see a great number of example in the law of sinful acts being punish .. (genesis chapters 7 -8, 19, exodus 32 (whole chapter ) but pay close attention to what happens to the israelites in vs 25 -29 and 35, then ion numbers 25 and 31)

also a vital point to make is that if the command in livitus 17 can be shown to speak of the jewish sacrificaial systen, at leat an aspect .. then the false veiw of giving blood is shot out of the water ... and is an eisegetical evasion .. a trwisting of scripture .. something foriegn to the context being forced unto the text then the jehovah witness idea is fundamentally in error and needs attention and correction
now we come to the new testament and we have only 1 passage to deal with .. for such a teaching we have seen one passage from the old testament being utilised in a false manner, now we turn to their cheif new testament passage on this regard

Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but should wr...ite to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. 21 For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues

from this passage they read into the phrase "and from blood" ... a foreign concept that apostles would never have made any connection to .. "blood donation" and this is such a distortion of the text that Jehovah winess organisation has been guilty in manipulating its member into believing a doctrine which is 100 percent fabricated
the above mentioned things "to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood" all require a little understanding of the law itself .. and how these things are to be understood ....

first -- you have the ten commandment (idols) this is one of the 10 commandment infact it fits most of the ten in one way or another -- because your possessions, your wealth, even your business can be an idol if it is place in such a context
but main the 1st and second commandment are really seen in this .... one phrase -- this is one aspect of the creation laws

second -- you have sexual immorality .. which emcompasses whole list of different act as found in leviticus 18 .. for example "None of you shall approach any one of his close relatives to uncover nakedness. I am the Lord. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's wife; it is your father's nakedness. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether brought up in the family or in another home. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son's daughter or of your daughter's daughter, for their nakedness is your own nakedness" .. this covers another aspect of the creation laws

lastly --- you have this ... "what has been strangled, and from blood" this refers to meats with blood in as one commentary states and in the following section of scripture it makes it plain that these things are pollutions to the believer .. "that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. -- so the thing in this which are to be abstaned from .. are things which can contaminat the worship of the believer

there is another issue that needs to be addressed in this ... which is what were they being saved from, and what were they being saved unto

1 --- the new testament gives us a lot of background on different points .. the new converts to which acts 15 was speaking of were people who engaged in idolatry, in child sacrifice , in eat polluted food and many other things which were under Gods judgement .. and quite rightly

as evidenced in the city of corinth .. this city was over run by idolatry, sexual perversion, and much more by read 1st corinthians ... we learn the churches in corinth were plagued by many different perversions ... which came from the city iotself into the living church by its members -- here is an example

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you (1 corinthins 5)

this is just one example of something which was rampant in the city of corinth, which polutted the church in many ways ...

2 -- the new testament also gives us the manner of salvation .. in the LORD Jesus Christ .. whom gave himself as a garantee of the salvation that is the elects ... it doesnt just make mn savable but actually saves him from death

and this path is evidenced by many great passages in the new testament such as romans, ephesian, galations and others .. but here is one for sake of this examination -- romans 5

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

the most vital point here is that this justification is an act that has already been accomplished on our behalf by christ our lord from eternity past ... and our peace is garanteed from this fact

and here is the final reality of this ideal of watchtower .. if j .ws are not allowed to give blood to save anothers life ... and Jesus to them is not God but a mere creation, a perfect man .. then does this not produce an contradiction .. in that Jesus .. a man gave his life for sake of saving others, but j.w who say they emulate christ are forbidden to do what the Lord done save lives ... so where do we stand on this issue .. the bible is clear there is not a single verse prohibiting such a thing yet they force a doctrine , a belief on the text of scripture just to keep there people in this deluded practice through manipulative tactics and force
